Future Gadgets & Technology

tesla_roadster

The Tesla Roadster, first unveiled in 2006 at a California car show, is one of the most coveted electric cars available in today’s market. Some of the impressive specs of this electric beauty are that it can travel approximately 250 miles on a single charge from its lithium-ion battery pack, accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds (faster than a corvette), and can fully recharge in less than 3.5 hours.

Some of the downers of this car include a hefty price tag at around $100,000, a $1,000 delivery fee, a battery pack that only lasts 100,000 miles and costs a whopping $36,000 to replace it, and the inability to travel long distances. Surely, this is a car for the rich and famous. Hopefully, one day it will become more practical for the every day driver.

minority-report-touchwall

Remember in the movie Minority Report where Tom Cruise is using some state-of-the-art computer where he controlled pretty much everything just by moving his hands? Well, according to Microsoft’s head guru, Bill Gates, this technology has been in the works for quite some time and  in as little as 1 year from now such technology could be released.

How this technology would work is by using built-in motion sensors on TVs and computer screens that would mimic human movements and integrate them into the system. This could mean that the function of a mouse and keyboard may be rendered obsolete in the near future, although, I doubt most people will be able to afford such future technology for quite some time. The nice thing about these  future gadgets (besides being exciting) is that technology continues to improve and 2nd generation stuff will become even more affordable.

future cell phone

Apparently Nokia has a cool and unique phone in the works that will be able to charge itself without any wires. The phone accomplishes this by harvesting radio waves found in the air and coverts that energy into power for the phone. Such waves are derived from a number of different places, including TVs, radios, computers, and other mobile phones.

Since this phone is still in the development process, it is currently only capable of havesting 5 mw (milliwatts) at a time, which is just not enough to make the phone efficient. Nokia hopes to increase that number to 20 mw in the near future, making it more practicable to the typical cell phone user. While this type of phone does not have any kind of scheduled release date, the hope is that it will be ready within the next 3-4 years.

future-tvs

This is a 43 inch curved LCD, manufactured by the company NEC. Equipped with a resolution of 2880 x 900, refresh rate of 0.02 ms, 10,000:1 contrast ration, USB & HDMI ports, and a whopping price tag of $8,000, many people believe that the future of TV’s are headed this way.

This LCD is created by basically ‘sewing’ together 4 smaller LCD’s and making them into one bigger one, which allows for its unique curve. Rival company Alienware has developed their own version as well with equal specs, only theirs measures 5 inches longer. This TV/monitor was originally designed for use by businesses and people who sought giant monitors for their computers. The official release date for this state-of-the-art curved TV is set for mid July, 2009.

For some reason I don’t think very many of these TVs will sell with a price tag of $8,000 – especially during these tough economical times. At least it should help lower costs of regular LCDs and plasmas and will eventually fall in price as time passes.

water-powered-car

Is the future of cars headed towards water powered cars, or is this just wishful thinking? Japanese car company Genepax has recently unveiled a mini car that supposedly runs purely on H2O. How it works is by using a built-in energy generator that extracts hydrogen molecules from water and converts them into electrons, which are then used to power the vehicle.

Many people are still skeptical about this design, saying that such a water-powered car would require more than just water and that it has too many limitations (such as speed and safety). While this eco-friendly car seems ideal in solving the world’s oil crisis, only Japan will start manufacturing the Genepax and will set the starting price at roughly $18,000. This water-powered car is also said to reach speeds of up to 50 mph and acheive almost 200 miles per gallon of water.

palm-pre-over-iphone

Meet the Palm Pre, the lifeline of Palm and probably Sprint as well. There has been a fairly large amount of buzz over this phone and part of that buzz comes from how much time and money has been spent on developing this advanced smart phone of the future. What’s so great about this phone one might ask? Let’s take a look at some of the specs and latest features:

  • Multitasking OS (can run multiple programs at once, unlike the iphone)
  • MMS messaging (can send images, audio, video via text messages)
  • Multi-touch commands (can zoom in or out by pinching)
  • Full Qwerty keyboard
  • Palm OS capable (can port in palm apps from previous palm phones)
  • 320 x 480 pixel screen (great for watching movies and Youtube)
  • 3 Megapixel camera with flash
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Wifi
  • GPS
  • 3G & more

The price for this cool new cell phone will be competitive and probably set at around $200-300 dollars with a 2 year plan. The release date for the Palm Pre seems to be somewhere around the middle of May, as all Sprint employees are not allowed to have any time off during that month. I don’t know about you, but I will be one of the first people in line when this phone gets released – for once I’ll get to be the “cool cat on campus”.

starcraft 2

Blizzard recently launched a new platform for past, current, and particularly future gamers which allows users to log all of the their games and login information under one account. Basically, what this means is that instead of having to log in to each separate battle net account every time you want to play a game, you will only have to log into your battle net account, where all of your gaming information is stored and you just have to select the game you wish to play. This new format will make it easier to remember all of the account names and passwords, and will also let users play from any computer because all the games can be downloaded and everything you need to play will be in the account.

This new battle net system isn’t required [yet] and is compatible with Blizzard’s most popular games – W.o.W. + Starcraft + Diablo II + Warcraft III. However, for their upcoming games (Starcraft II and Diablo III) it will be required to have a new battle net account.

future-gaming-on-live

This quite possibly could be the future of gaming consoles. Meet the upcoming ‘On Live‘ device set to launch in the winter of 2009. The On Live gaming system takes gaming to a whole new level, by allowing users to play video games which are  streamed online. This new concept would elminate ever having to buy new video games or new controllers for every system upgrade  because all of the games are dealt online. The only downer that could come of this new invention is from having a bad internet connection.  In order for the games to run smoothly, make sure you have a connection of 2 mbps or greater.

Costs have not yet been determined but they are expected to be less than $250 for the console and have a tiered monthly pricing scale. This new method sounds like having a subscription to GameFly, without having to wait for games to come in the mail. On Live sounds promising and should do well for a release in winter, just in time for Christmas.
